GOTA, which stands for Get On The Air, is a radio donation program provided by Butte County CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). This program emphasizes the importance of radio communication assistance, especially when power, internet, or cell networks fail. With radio communications, many individuals can be reached at once. During emergencies, under the guidance of the Butte County Sheriff's Office, Butte County CERT radio operators rebroadcast the Sheriff's emergency alert messages on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and amateur radio frequencies. Utilizing two-way GMRS radios, citizens can receive emergency messages and remain connected with others in the Butte County radio community. Butte County CERT aims to help individuals successfully Get On The Air, ensuring reliable radio communications are accessible when other communication tools are compromised.
Perhaps you already understand the value of radio communications, but if you're in Butte County CERT and lack funding for the necessary equipment to get started, there is help available. You can apply for radio communication assistance through the GOTA program by completing a GOTA application. Our GOTA evaluation team will review your request, and to the extent that equipment is available, we will strive to assist those community members who will benefit the most. Please note that GOTA applicants must obtain their GMRS license prior to applying for GOTA assistance.
